Shopping for souvenirs in Lombok, Indonesia

When shopping for souvenirs in Lombok, remember this: Big is Better.
For one stall, that is. Not a big place with a collection of small players.

Take Pasar Seni (Pasar = market, Seni = Art) for instance. Do not buy there. Go, but only to soak in the tourist atmosphere there and check out the (ridiculously high) benchmark prices for fleecing orang asing (foreigners). Concentrated in a sort of big concentric circle of individual stores, the individual stalls are similarly linked in their procurement, one suspects. You get the same starting quotation for the item and the price gets whittled down to a (still high) lower one whichever stall you seem to land at. The cartel system is further cemented in buyers' mind when the vendors rejoin your bargaining efforts with a confident price 'guarantee' -
"Come back to me if you find a lower price here & I'll give it to you for free!"

Further down the road towards the Mataram direction, there is a shop worth a look.
